Hey friends! November is known as the month of gratitude. You may see your Facebook feed filled with posts each day where friends list what they are grateful for. I tell ya, those posts sure are a nice distraction from the negativity and rants that have been populating the feeds here lately!
I’ve never participated in the daily gratitude posts on Facebook but I do take time each day for reflection and if I’m not able to write down my gratitude list, I run through the list in my mind or I use the Five Minute Journal app on my phone. Sometimes it may be really difficult to focus on what is going right in our lives when there is so much negativity surrounding us. That is why taking those few minutes each day to reflect is so important.
How Do You WANT to Feel?
I’m a believer that like attracts like and the energy that you put out into the universe is what is drawn back to you. I imagine our energy as a magnetic field made up of our feelings and those feelings are pulling like magnets people and situations that reinforce those feelings. If you’ve been feeling really fired up here lately- don’t fret! I’m not saying that we shouldn’t feel our feelings and process emotions but you definitely shouldn’t stay in that mindset or “energy” that is making you feel bad.
We’ve all heard someone say “Snap out of it!”. I have to do this all the time! Sometimes, I’ll start thinking of something and then before I know it I’m pulling up crap from years ago. For those moments, if I’m able, I’ll pull up pictures on my phone of my daughter that make me smile or repeat an affirmation in my mind. It’s like hitting the reset button. I try to fill my life with people, thoughts, things and experiences that reflect back to me how I want to feel.
Anything is Possible
Writing this brought up a couple quotes that sums up what I’m trying to say perfectly. The first one is, “Be. Do. Have.” and the other is “You’ll SEE it when you BELIEVE it”. Have you heard either of those? How many times have you or someone you know said, “I’ll feel so much better when this is over.” or “When I lose these last 10 pounds, I’ll feel good.” That is NOT how it- insert universe, God etc. works. You first have to FEEL (remember feelings are magnets) the feelings that you think you’ll feel once X is achieved.
Visualization is a powerful tool for helping feel those feelings now before you have achieved your goal. So first you have to “Be” – visualize the person that you want to be and feel what it would feel like to achieve your goal, “Do” take action towards your goal and then finally “Have”. It’s important to note here because it was a HUGE lesson for me that you have to be open to receiving AND that the end result may look different from what you imagined.
We live in a bountiful universe full of endless possibilities where anything is possible so don’t limit yourself. If an opportunity or experience arises that doesn’t “look” like what you want, don’t shut it out. Be open to trying new things and you will be amazed at what you bring into your life!
Here’s another example, if you are stuck in a rut of getting up, going to work, coming home, watching tv, going to bed and doing the same thing day after day and then on the weekend doing the same thing, nothing is going to change unless you do! I can say that out of experience- that was me and I was miserable. Everyday I would think, “There has to be more to life.” And there is! But you are the only one that has the power to change it. You don’t have to do something dramatic because small action can create big results.
Shake up that energy! Drive a new way to work or back home. Call up a friend you haven’t seen in a while and make plans to meet up for coffee. Make a list of places around town you’d like to visit and then go! Take the time to strike up a conversation with someone new. Smile at people and when talking to them – even on the phone!
You get to choose how you want to feel- no one has that power over you. Before you get out of bed each morning, give thanks. Run through your mind how you’d like your day to go. Then give thanks in advance for all the amazing miracles that will occur. That’s not too far fetched, right? This may sound a little scary but you have to step out of your comfort zone to experience change. Changing your thoughts is free and you control them – no one else has that power over you so take control. 🙂
Whew! This post was a long one and I didn’t know that it would go on this long so if you’ve reached the bottom, thank you! My hope is that something in this post resonated with you. If you have any suggestions, I’d love to hear them so share them in the comments below.
